Carnegie Mellon University’s Fix-it Fair Mending Workshop repairs items and teaches attendees how to mend clothing, resulting in reducing waste by keeping these items out of the landfill.
Food Waste Reduction Winner: Chapman University, California
Chapman University increases awareness about post-consumer waste by collecting all the uneaten food from Randall Dining Commons for a lunch period and weighing it.
Education and Awareness Winner: University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
University of Pittsburgh hosts the Zero Waste Period program to advance menstrual equity on campus, sharing information about the physical and environmental health aspects of period products.
Summary of Waste Reduction Efforts Winner: University of Nebraska, Lincoln

2021 Competition by the Numbers
During the 2021 Campus Race to Zero Waste Competition:
- 9 million students and staff were reached from more than 200 colleges and universities.
- 230 million plastic containers were kept out of the landfill.
- Campuses prevented the release of 30,669 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MTCO2E) into the atmosphere, equivalent to preventing annual emissions from 6,463 cars.
- 25.8 million pounds of waste was donated, recycled and composted.

Food Waste Reduction: Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis – Launches Riverwalk Composting Pilot Program, a student‐led initiative focused on empowering residents at Riverwalk Apartments to compost their food waste.
Education and Awareness:
- Dallas College– Promotes zero waste with an online Zero Waste Education Hub, and modeled Zero Waste Practices in Arts, Construction and Public Health.

During the 2020 Spring RecycleMania Competition:

2019 Competition by the Numbers
During the 2019 Spring RecycleMania Competition:
- 5 million college students, faculty and staff were reached; 1.25 million actively engaged.
- 300 U.S. and Canadian campuses participated.
- 69.5 million pounds of waste is recycled or composted (materials were also donated and used as biofuels).
- 300 million single-use plastic containers were removed from the waste stream.
- Campuses prevented the release of 99,254 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MTCO2E) into the atmosphere, equivalent to preventing annual emissions from 20,895 cars! Since 2001, RecycleMania has engaged and educated millions of students, faculty and staff at more than 1,000 colleges and universities, preventing the release of nearly 1.55 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, which is comparable to removing over 320,000 passenger vehicles from the road for one year.
